What Is A Level 2 Background Check?
According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), a Level 2 Background Check screening is:
A state and national fingerprint-based check and consideration of disqualifying offenses, and applies to those employees designated by law as holding positions of responsibility or trust.
Currently, Florida is the only state with a Level 2 Background Check. The FDLE does not require the rechecking of employees.
What Are The Requirements?
The requirements for this type of check vary depending on whether you’re doing a State or National Level 2 Background Check.
For a State Check, submitting a fingerprint card or name request is a requirement.
For a National Check, the requirements that need to be met include:
- Must not be against public policy.
- Fingerprinting of the person being searched.

- The entity receiving the information must be a governmental institution.
- The entity must agree to the terms and conditions set by the FBI.
How Does It Differ From A Level 1 Background Check?
A Level 1 Background Check is a “state only name-based check AND an employment history check.”
So, the main differences between this check and a Level 2 Background Check screening are that:
- There Are Only Options For A State Background Check and Employment History Search.
- It Doesn’t Involve Fingerprint Search.
- It Doesn’t Focus On Disqualifying Offenses.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost of a Level 2 Background Check depends on who’s submitting the search and who’s being searched. Along with this, both State and Federal Fees must be paid as well. The cost ranges from $0 to $36.
What Information Does A Level 2 Background Check Include?
As stated above, this type of check focuses on disqualifying offenses that would make someone ineligible for a position of responsibility. The information that’s typically looked into includes criminal offenses, like sexual misconduct, murder, and kidnapping.
Specifically, sealed criminal information can only be provided to agencies as set by Section 943.059. Expunged information cannot be provided as part of a criminal history search.
How Far Back Does A Level 2 Background Check Go?
State and National Level 2 Background Checks usually takes about three business days to come back. The results will include national and state criminal history and warrants. However, the results will be removed 6 months from the date the check results were sent.
